Last week sucked—it was straight up emotionally rough. My August housing fell through after I’d completely packed up from the last place. Then, my bikes fell off my car. Two of them. On the highway. At 65 miles an hour.

Now, I’m staying with my sister’s family in Los Altos. Talking with my bro-in-law yesterday about how our days went, I reported that “Today was good since I’m getting back on track…”

Yeah, last week’s events really took their toll. Having to revisit the sublet or housesitting search again was stressful. (My work goals just fly out the window when that fundamental need, i.e. shelter, is in question.)

The thought that people could’ve been seriously hurt when my bikes fell (thank Gawd there were no collisions!!) was traumatizing. Not to mention would I have to invest in a new commuter bike??

Understanding that stressful situations are amplified by hormones such as cortisol flooding the body, the best thing I could’ve done once I was in a safe space was to get heart-pumping exercise to clear out those hormones.

I do yoga daily but often barely get warmed up. While this is better than nothing, I’m learning from Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz’s book The Power of Full Engagement that it’s not enough. (more…)

Dan PortnoyDan Portnoy is a marketing “fixer.” Mostly, though not exclusively, applying his skills to the non-profit world, he’s the one you turn to when your plane’s going down—meaning your ad campaign is failing or a launch fell flat.

He’s an expert in translating a compelling message into multiple channels of communication—not an easy feat. Over the last decade, he’s honed his skills to become a successful:

  • Media and Campaign Strategist
  • Speaker
  • Trainer and Coach
  • Author
  • Award Winning Director and Producer

Success for Dan as a creative entrepreneur is rooted in knowing himself, owning and honoring his natural talents, and continuing to expand his repertoire of skills. And having coffee in the house.

In my drive from Seattle back to home base in California, I listened to Tripp Lanier’s interview with Tony Schwartz on Tripp’s New Man podcast. (Me? No, I’m not a “New Man”.)

The following video (shot at some random exit off of Highway 5) was inspired by that conversation. Before the video, I wanted to share a little info that wasn’t easily accessible while driving.

Did you know our bodies—and, more importantly, our brains—cycle through energy reserves every 90 minutes?

According to Tony Schwartz, we have an energy cycle that pays off huge to honor–the ultradian rhythm.

To give yourself the best circumstances for a productive work day, he suggests that every 90 minutes we give ourselves a mini (or major) recharge. (More often is fine, too!)

This helps keep your focus from wandering all over the place and provides a great opportunity to reset/reconnect with your intentions.

If you are mindful of this energy cycle, you can plan short recharging breaks before you hit empty and reach for yet another cup of coffee. (more…)

2014-07-11 20.22.17Do you have the kind of life that can’t afford you returning home from a conference exhausted?

Whether from fun or straight up overload, there are practices you can take with you to minimize the negative impacts.

I’m still coming down from the high that is the World Domination Summit (WDS)…

After two years of attending this conference–a gathering centered around living a remarkable life in a conventional world–I decided to “unconference” this year. This means that I didn’t have a ticket—I just went for the connecting, networking, and socializing. Fun!

One of the themes that I got to talk about again and again (sometimes a great opportunity to try out different slants and sometimes a drag to feel like I’m repeating myself over and over) was energy management.

2014-07-11 19.48.53And since this is currently the topic near and dear to my heart, I’ll share highlights of the weekend through that lens. By the way, it’s also the topic for this month’s Authentic Success podcast episode, as you will see below.

So that we’re on the same page… I’m defining Energy management as learning how to manage your energy in order to design your life.

The five components that I’ve identified are: (more…)
